The archives from Mari, dating back to the 19th and 18th centuries B.C., inform us in a very detailed way about the struggles that were going on in an attempt to control the region. As far as we know, after a period of relative autonomy, the region passed under the alternating control of three regional powers: Ešnunna, Babylon and Mari. The texts mainly inform us about the invasions from Ešnunna when Suhûm was placed under the control of Mari. Nevertheless, the region, in particular the city of Hît and its bitumen springs, was also important to Babylon for economic reasons. Besides, the final destruction of Mari in 1759 B.C. might have been motivated by the will to have the region controlled exclusively by Babylon: the king Hammurabi might have wanted to destroy a kingdom that was threatening the Babylonian interests in the region forever.Show less >
