His philosophical works, which appeared before this date, were little reported, and the image that the few commentators circulated about him was that of a sceptical thinker, possibly anti-religious, and a manipulator of paradoxes (Malherbe 2005, 2010). L'Annee litteraire praised Hume's book and its translation by Le Blanc. The translation of Hume's essays took on an unsuspected scale. The Mauvillon translation provides the essays with no introduction or comments; on the contrary, that of Le Blanc accompanies them with an impressive preface and many notes. In the Elemens du commerce, Forbonnais quotes favourably Hume's essay "Of Luxury", taking from this the theme of the consubstantiality of the progress in luxury, the arts, manners, civility and knowledge. As a reader of Jean-Francois Melon, this theme was not unknown to Forbonnais.Lire moins >
