Show more >Dormant capital : Passing on the inheritance of the woods among farmers in Franche-ComtéIn Franche-Comté, France, the woods belonging to farmers is treated like dormant capital held in reserve to be tapped as a function of the family’s material or economic needs. Marshall Sahlins’ idea, as developed in relation to so-called primitives societies, of a quant-à-soi is relevant here. Forest management, a minor farming activity, is undertaken by the farmer’s retired father. The «woods» is a «space» in family life where the son who takes over the farm accords his father a legitimate place.Show less >
