The link between adolescents’ perception of parenting style (i.e. permissive, authoritarian, authoritative), traditional bullying and cyberbullying remains unclear in the literature. We assumed that cyberbullying and traditional bullying would be associated with inefficient parenting styles (i.e. authoritarian and permissive parenting styles). A total of 601 French adolescents aged 10 to 14 years participated in this study. Participants completed questionnaires assessing cyberbullying and cyber-victimization, traditional school bullying and traditional victimization and parenting styles. We found that only a permissive parenting style was correlated with traditional bullying and cyberbullying. Permissive parents have few rules, reduced supervision, and few expectations and demands. Hence, their children tend to struggle with self-regulation, which may subsequently lead to bullying and cyberbullying. It is therefore important to focus on parenting practices to prevent bullying (traditional bullying and cyberbullying) by teaching children proper ways to use the internet.Lire moins >
