After a brief outline of the events surrounding the Marquisate in the second half of the sixteenth century, the chapter presents the contents of three Vatican manuscripts, which preserve a wealth of documentation on the arbitration procedure, and examines the main arguments put forward by the parties before the pope. The analysis highlights some of the references in this documentation to categories and principles developed by late medieval jurisprudence, in order to show the great importance of the latter in the discussion of an international dispute. The chapter concludes with a summary of the events that followed the failure of the arbitration until the Treaty of Lyons in 1601.Lire moins >
