The theoretical and experimental research carried out by Charles Augustin Coulomb (1736–1806) to calculate torsional forces in metal wires had two objectives: 1) based on the Newtonian mechanical paradigm to determine the torsional tensile strength of iron and brass wires, relating this to the length of the wire, its diameter and traction; 2) calculate the imperfection of the elastic reaction of the metal wires, and describe what possible consequences are taken, related to the laws of elasticity of the bodies involved. Based on historical documents––&––method, for the sake of brevity, we mainly aim to describe a) the early experiments and his combined torsional vibrations modelling, b) to detail Coulomb’s construction of the torsional balance. We integrated the methods outlined in History of Physics and History of Science and Technology.Show less >
