With attention to the characteristics of both vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, this text considers the occurrence of several, often conflicting, memory discourses within the public sphere of a given community, as well as those discourses that are produced beyond or below the central state, often transcending national boundaries and sometimes in conflict with discourses promoted by the state. Thematically structured to explore the manner in which states were able, during the 20th century, to produce, structure and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes even against the lived experiences of their members, and to examine the occurrence of horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation, this volume also considers the attempts by national governments to reassert control of national memory discourses attempts that are often met with resistance by various actors. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and political science with interests in memory studies and post-conflict societies.Lire moins >
