Lire la suite >Background. The onset of pediatric cancer leads to upheaval and changes in the functioning of the parental couple. One of the strengths that enables parents to cope with difficulties and to alleviate their distress is hope. The aim of this study is to understand the dynamics and mechanisms of hope in the dyadic adjustment processes of parents confronted with their child's cancer. Method. This is a qualitative study of 5 couples with a child with cancer, in treatment or in remission, where each parent is interviewed separately. The semi-structured interviews were subjected to an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results. Initial analyses revealed three themes. "A transfer of hope towards each other. Indeed, within the couples, each partner has distinct and complementary roles linked to their personality and skills. The use of these resources allows for the exchange of hope within the parenting dyad. "A guide to move forward", in spite of a prevailing uncertainty, parents need to follow a precise direction largely supported by the hope of reaching a specific objective. "An energy to fight" because hope is a driving force in the common struggle of couples whose mission is to protect and improve the quality of life of their child. Discussion. These findings underscore the need to pay particular attention to the role of hope within parenting dyads to optimize the care of couples with a child with cancer.Lire moins >
