Show more >Ending viceroys: The fragmentation of superior gobierno in the last third of the 18th centuryThis article aims to examine some of the most important political changes that occurred in the history of the Indies after their initial organisation. Under the government of the Secretary of the Indies José de Gálvez (1776-1787), three new Audiencias, a viceroyalty, a general commandery and two general captaincies modified the jurisdictional framework of the Indies. The existence of new juris-dictions was the result of the convergence between the projects of local actors, a new political situation, and the personal orientations of the new Secretary of State.Show less >
