Lire la suite >In the Acheulean period, while the use of hard and soft organic hammers at different stages of biface shaping is widely accepted, the use of soft sandstone type is not, or only to a limited extent. Located in the Somme valley near Amiens, the Acheulean open-air settlement of Cagny-l'Epinette (MIS 9-10) yielded many faunal remains associated with lithic industry. The interglacial fauna includes aurochs (adults and juveniles) and red deer. On site, shed red deer antlers and the skulls bearing the antlers suggest a close relationship between the exploitation of deer for various activities, including the shaping of bifaces. In addition, sandstone hammers are also present. In order to prove the use of these three hammers, two hundred flakes were studied in detail. Moreover, usewear analysis has been conducted on about twenty red deer antlers. Beforehand, a protocol regarding natural deer antlers was undertaken as well as the benefit of the study of four lithic experiments of biface shaping with different hammers (see poster session of the colloquium). At this stage of our analyses, we can presume the use of hard mineral hammers, soft mineral (sandstone) and soft organic (deer antler) hammers during the Lower Palaeolithic.Lire moins >
