Lire la suite >ABSTRACT.Metabolic disorder contributes to the increasein the mortality rate of patients onhemodialysis(HD). The aim of this study was toestimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS) and malnutritionin patients onmaintenanceHD and to evaluate their influence oncardiovascular and all-cause mortalityduring the follow-up. We carried outa prospective cross-sectional studyin which we enrolled 100 patients from a single center whohad been followed upfor three years.Collected data includeddemographic characteristics, detailedmedical history,clinical variables, MSvariables, nutritional status, and laboratory findings. The outcomes werethe occurrence of a cardiovascular event and cardiovascular or all-cause mortality during thefollow-up period.The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences softwarewas usedfor statisticalanalysis. Whereas 50% of patients had MS, 23% showed evidence of malnutrition. Patients withMS were olderand had more preexisting cardiovasculardiseases(CVDs). All patients werefollowed for 36 months. During this time, 19patients with MS and 14 patients without MS died(38% vs. 28%; P = 0.19), most frequently of CVD.Mean survival time was 71.52 ± 42.1monthsfor MS groupversus 92.06 ± 65 monthsfor non-MS group, but the difference was notsignificant.MS was related with a higher cardiovascular mortality, while malnutrition was significantlyassociated with all-cause mortality.Our data showedthatMS was not related to cardiovascular orall-cause mortality in HD patients and didnot influence survival. The independent risk factors forall-causemortality were older age, preexisting CVD, and malnutrition.Lire moins >
